3 Reasons We Put Off Doing What We Know Is Right

3 Reasons We Put Off Doing What We Know Is Right

We all want a life abundant with meaning, purpose, and passion, so why do we procrastinate taking the steps necessary to do what feels right in our heart and soul?

Turns out –waiting years or even decades before doing what we long to — is a very common practice around the world and even more common among women.

I’ve discovered through my 5 years of coaching, that women fall prey to this much more than men because we are not only nurturers by nature but also are taught to put our thoughts, feelings, and dreams aside to take care of others. And don’t get me wrong there are certainly times in our lives when this is temporarily necessary such as raising children, caring for aging or sick family members, or helping a friend in crisis, etc.

However, what I’m talking about here are the times when we find ourselves in bad marriages, toxic relationships, jobs we hate, accepting weight issues and poor health, or simply living a life we don’t want while continually dreaming about the life we do. If we know what we don’t want and what does feel right in our hearts, why do we hold ourselves back from letting go of situations that no longer serve us, making positive changes to improve our lives, or going after what we really want in life?

Below are the top 3 reasons why we put off or fail to start taking actions that will create a more rewarding and satisfying life that aligns with what we believe and know deep down is right:

  1. No Vision Many times we fail to even contemplate change because we feel overwhelmed at the thought of the process, so we don’t even allow ourselves to dream of what’s possible for us. We settle in a life of mediocrity making excuses for our inactions, rationalizing our undesired situation, and blaming others and outside forces for our discontent. We know what we don’t want, but not really sure what we do, therefore we have a problem but no solution. When we don’t have a clear direction or purpose it’s easy to get entangled in others’ wants, needs, and dreams and lose focus of what’s important to us.

In order to get started on your journey, you need to have a detailed and meaningful vision of what you want because if you don’t know where you’re going, how will we know when you get there! A strong vision is essential for keeping you focused and on track in all areas of your life and serves as the inspiration that excites and motivates you to set and achieve your goals.

  1. No Plan or Goals – One of the main reasons we feel overwhelmed and anxious about overcoming a challenge or achieving a goal is that we don’t have a plan in place so we don’t know where or how to start.

Without a plan and goals you will waste a lot of time, energy, effort, and money chasing things that may bring immediate satisfaction, but will seldom lead to long term happiness or fulfillment. When you pursue goals that don’t really matter to you, but to please others, you’ll become bored, uninspired, and frustrated in your life and oftentimes most of the people in it.

Your vision is what inspires you but it’s your goals and actions that will turn your dreams into reality. By having a solid plan and the right goals in place, you will feel more confident in yourself and more in command of your life because you’ll know the steps you’ll need to take in order to overcome your challenges and be successful in all areas of your life.

  1. Lack of Support from Others – One of the biggest obstacles that can stop you right in your tracks is the lack of support, ridicule, or even worse, the undermining of your efforts by those you hold dear. Unfortunately, not everyone will be on board when you decide to break free from mediocrity and make the decision to better yourself and your life. If this is the case, you may want to question their motives, whether they have your best interest in mind, or if they deserve a place in your close circle.

If you have manipulative people in your life that will sabotage your efforts, limit your exposure to them and start surrounding yourself with like-minded people who will champion your cause.

Create a support team of people who you can confide in or lean on in times of struggle. If you need unbiased guidance and support or decide you require life skills and success strategies to move forward, it may be time to reach outside of your circle and attend workshops or seek out professional help from a coach or mentor.

A great life doesn’t happen by chance, it happens by choice. So make the decision to allow yourself to envision what you really want for yourself and your life and then make a plan of how you will turn that beautiful vision into your reality. And one of the most important things you can do to dramatically increase your chances for success is to start surrounding yourself with those who not only want to see you grow and succeed, but who also want to help you grow and succeed.
