5 Steps To Making Positive Changes That Get Results

We all have things in our lives we’d like to change or improve upon; it’s how we move forward, grow, and succeed. So why do we often feel fearful, stuck, overwhelmed, or fail to see results when it comes to making positive changes? I’ve found that it’s because we don’t understand the Who, What, When, How and Why of setting and reaching our goals.

Fortunately, it’s never too late to start. Every moment is a new opportunity to take charge of your situation, create positive and lasting changes, and enjoy the present while creating the future you desire. No matter where you’ve been up until now, how young or old you are, or what limits you may have accepted in the past, you possess everything you need right now to improve all areas of your life.

By understanding and implementing these 5 steps before you set out make changes in your life, you will have a much better chance of achieving your goals and feeling the satisfaction, confidence, and pride of knowing you have the power to do and become anything you desire.

The Who, What, When, Why & How of Goal Setting

Define your “What” – Your “what” is your vision or your goal.  If you’re living the life you have while dreaming of the life you really want; one reason you may be failing to achieve your goals or realize the life of your dreams is that you’re not really sure what your ideal life looks like. When you don’t clearly define your vision or goal, it’s easy to get distracted and you’ll find yourself facing the same challenges and entertaining the same dreams year after year.

Dissect your “Why” – What is your motivation? What will making that positive change mean for you, how will you feel after achieving your goal, and in turn how will that positively affect your family, job/career, relationships, health and other areas of your life?

Knowing the real reason why you want to make changes will help keep you motivated especially if you run into a rough patch.

Document your “When” – Have a timeframe in place as to when you want to achieve your goal, otherwise it’s just an intention. Be realistic, but pick a date that will slightly challenge you. This helps keep up the momentum.

Devise your “How” – Create a plan that will outline the “targeted” action steps you will take to reach your goal. The one thing that separates the dreamers from the achievers is the type of actions they take. Dreamers can easily keep busy all day long and continually complain they have no time to pursue their goals and that’s because the activities they are engaging in are not getting them closer to their goals, or even worse sabotaging them. Achievers take Targeted Action Steps and make each day count. They stay focused on the end goals and plan their activities around them. Having a long term plan with specific short term success-oriented action steps keeps you focused and will dramatically increase your chances for success.

Decide on “Who” – Unfortunately, not everyone in your life may be on board with your desire to improve your life. If that’s the case, you may want to limit your exposure to them, at least temporarily. Surround yourself with like-minded people who motivate and inspire you and who have gone through similar challenges and been successful. Create a support team of people who you can confide in or lean on in times of struggle. If you need unbiased guidance and support or decide you require life skills and success strategies to move forward, it may be time to reach outside of your circle and attend workshops or seek out professional help such as a life coach or mentor.
